I Paid Every EMI on Time. Why Did My CIBIL Score Still Drop?

Seeing your CIBIL score fall after paying every EMI on time can be confusing. It may also create stress when you are planning to apply for a home loan, personal loan or credit card. Timely repayment matters, but it is not the only part of a credit profile. Suppose your credit-card limit is ₹1 lakh and your outstanding balance suddenly rises to ₹80,000. Even when you pay the bill on time, the higher usage may make your credit position look more stretched. Several recent loan or credit-card applications may also affect the profile. Each application can create an enquiry, and too many enquiries within a short period may suggest that you are actively seeking more credit. Your credit mix can change too.
Closing an old account, taking a new unsecured loan or becoming responsible for a joint loan may affect the information used to calculate the score. CIBIL identifies payment history, credit utilisation, credit mix and multiple enquiries as important factors affecting a score. It also recommends checking the credit report regularly because lender-reported information forms the basis of the report.
Start by comparing your current report with the previous one. Check for new enquiries, recently reported balances, closed accounts and any payment marked incorrectly. When you find an error, raise a dispute through the credit bureau’s official process and contact the lender that submitted the information.
Do not pay an unknown agency that promises an immediate score increase. Credit scores usually reflect behaviour over time. Focus on accurate reporting, manageable balances, limited unnecessary applications and regular payments. Avoid expecting a fixed improvement within a guaranteed number of days.
